Welcome O’ Breastfeeding Mother…not

Like most breastfeeding mothers I choose to breastfeed wherever I am, no matter where that might be.

Usually I have no problems sitting down in public, or standing around or walking about if I’m wrapping. Your as likely to see me in the display section of A.S.D.A “whipping out the boob” so to speak (only I’ve actually never come across this as pretty much all ‘breast feeding tops’ are made to help you with the “oh so needed decency”…) as you are finding me in the car ‘topping him up’ before our journey home. 🙂

And sometimes… just… sometimes… I feel brave and wonder off into the unknown…

The unknown in this case would be the designated ‘breast feeding rooms’ of wherever I am. Now in their defence, I just have to say that in Milton Keynes shopping centre, the accommodation is spectacular and I actually use this often as they have stuff to do for my daughter who can then run around without me having to worry. They also give me comfort and people to chat to. It’s a social gathering as much as it is a breast feeding session. 🙂 Which to me is actually quite important.

Now I’m sure you have all come across a room that has something to be desired?
Maybe not totally bad, but still.. not something you feel like eating in?
The other day I had this exact experience.
I was visiting TESCO, and my little squirt had to have his nappy changed. Now in most stores like this the changing room and the breastfeeding or just ‘feeding room’ if you prefer, is the same room. I don’t generally have a problem with that, as I feed and change a nappy in the same room at home too, I just wish the room itself was more inviting…

I guess it’s a plus that even though the bins were full, they hadn’t developed a nursing offspring just yet..

Doesn’t it look comfy?

On a serious note, is this really something TESCO thinks is acceptable? Because this is not the first of their stores I have entered and been met with this appalling condition.

I’m not saying we should have a ‘lazy boy’, but it shouldn’t be too much to ask that we have a decent chair to sit in, that doesn’t look like you found it in the alleyway behind the store! And the huge hole under the sink partly covered? ..come on…

Saying my experience left something to be desired would be polite, and after moving to England, I strive to meet these terms heh he.

I have e-mailed the store in question and I am eagerly awaiting their reply.

I have chosen to not share with you the exact location of the store in question, as I feel that wouldn’t be right. At least not until they have had a chance to get back to me. 🙂

Has something like this ever happened to you? Have you heard other stories of this? Who is responsible?

  1. Where I live (around St. Louis, Missouri) the nursing rooms are few and far between. In the almost 15 months that I have been a nursing mom, I think I’ve seen 2 and those have actually been couches in the “family restroom” at the mall. So I generally just whip it out wherever he needs it because the few nursing rooms they have are unacceptable.

    • It’s dreadful isn’t it? Lordie lord…

Generally I don’t use nursing rooms as I babywear and also see public breast feeding as the norm.
But for those who do wish to use them, they should really not be met with the sights we see too often, that’s for sure!

Well Done on your ongoing breastfeeding adventure! 🙂 15mo and going strong, good job! 🙂

      I tandemfeed my daughter and my youngest, he’s 1 and she’s 34 months. 🙂
